First Impressions: Tarte Matte & Glossy Lip Paints

Hey guys!!! I’m so excited to give you my first impression of Tarte’s Matte Lip Paints + Glossy Lip Paints — I got these eight trial sized colors in Tarte’s limited-edition posh pout quick dry & glossy lip set from their holiday collection.

I bought it online during their after-Christmas sale 😍. I actually got one of these sets for my friend a few weeks before at Sephora. I saw it again on Tarte’s website and wanted to try it out for myself. In this purchase, I got a few of Tarte’s other holiday collections and sets — I’ll be reviewing all of them in the weeks to come!

This set comes with eight different products — four matte lip paints, and four glossy lip paints. There’s an almost identical shade for both the matte and glossy formulas, which I personally LOVE! Depending on your preference, the products can be worn on their own or layered on top of each other.

Matte Lip Paints
In all honesty, these are alllright when applied by themselves — I’d give them a 7/10. When it comes to formula, I don’t think that these are the best on the market, here’s why:

PROS: The colors are definitely pigmented and come out true-to-color. They’re vibrant and bright, not losing any of their integrity when applied on the lips. The matte finish is close to perfect — they don’t dry out your lips or make you look dehydrated. The staying power is pretty good! I did the “water bottle” test, and while some of the pigment got onto the rim of the bottle, the color was still pretty much intact.

CONS: The colors are splotchy, this is my biggest gripe with them — they don’t spread evenly on the lips. There were points when I would rub my lips together to disperse the color and it would leave see-thru patches in some areas. I’m going to have to play around with them a bit more to give a conclusive, “yeah, I really don’t recommend these”. I think that if I were to put a lip liner on underneath it would really help the pigment cling to the lips.

Glossy Lip Paints
I loveeee these, I give them a 10/10! They’re definitely full-on pigment and look amazing overtop the matte lip paints.

PROS: They give just the right amount of shine — the finish is glossy but doesn’t make you look like a walking disco ball. The best part? They’re NOT STICKY! My biggest pet peeve when it comes to lip glosses is that some of them can be way too sticky. I love a gloss that’s smooth like buttttta!

CONS: This comes down to personal preference, but I don’t think that I’d wear these on their own. When a gloss is as pigmented as these are, I always find that they look better on-top of a matte liquid lip, or even a lipstick.

LOL — FOREWARNING: I’m really bad “staying in the lines” while applying these, so I apologize in advance for these poor swatches. I promise that I’ll improve with time 😂.

Valor + Cast

I’m obsessed with this combination. This cool red duo is definitely something that I wouldn’t go for on my own. The only time I have ever worn red lipstick is for themed parties in college — YIKES! I usually stay away from intense colors like these because I used to think that they were too bold. In reality, it was just me being afraid to step outside of my comfort zone!

Novel + Eager

Hmm, I’m still trying to get used to this color — pinky nudes are definitely not my thing. With time I bet this could grow on me a bit more, however these aren’t the colors that I think work with my skin tone. But for those of you that do love these types of shades, this one is beautiful! It’s definitely got a nude vibe to it, but the hint of light, baby pink adds some life and dimension to it.

Reign + Gifts

Love it! This one is most likely going to be my most worn combination — I’m all about these deep mauve shades and this look is so beautiful! I think it’s appropriate for both night and day, can you say helllllo #WorkThenPlay. It adds the perfect amount of color to a more relaxed makeup look, making you look more lively and fun.

Crown + Spice

WOAH, I’m shocked I even tried this combination on! But I’m so glad that I did — it’s seriously stunning. Obviously this isn’t something that you’d wear on Sunday to the grocery store, but it’s definitely going out worthy. Next time I have a fancy event — or just want to get overly-dressed up — I’m going to wear this combination!

I’m so happy that I purchased this set! It pushed me outside of my color comfort zone, giving me the encouragement to try out new more bold shades. When the two products are used together, they’re beautiful. The color range in this set is pretty awesome — there’s a little something for everyone.

After realizing how bad I am at applying these, I think it’s time for me to experiment with some lip liners! Do you guys have any recommendations for me?!

All Time Beauty Faves — The Necessities

Hey guys! 💜 While getting ready this morning, I had a realization that I’ve been using some of these makeup products for years! There’s some realllly good stuff here that I keep repurchasing whenever I run out.

There was a time in my life *COLLEGE* where I stopped buying high-end beauty products. I sort of fell out of love with makeup — I just wasn’t as passionate about it as I once was. Maybe the fact that I was a broke college student played a role in it. Trust me, buying $70 foundation definitely wasn’t at the top of my priority list at that time.

I remember when I consciously made a decision to stop excessively buying expensive make up. I was sitting at my desk-turned-vanity in my college bedroom, pulled open my two drawers filled with make up and it hit me. I don’t need 8 different mascaras, all I need is one really good one. And in my opinion, the $7.00 mascaras were so much better than the $25 dollar ones.

So that’s when I really started to pair down my makeup collection, but in reality it was more of like an addiction. Through trial and error, moving 3 times and basically living out of a suitcase at one point in my life — I’ve finally found the goooood stuff. It’s a mix of high-end and drugstore products, things that all fit into one makeup bag that I bring with me no matter what — these are my all time favorite necessities.

FACE (Foundation, Concealer + Powder)

Clinique Acne Solutions Liquid Makeup (Here)
This stuff is amazing. It’s medium coverage, but definitely buildable. About a year ago, my skin started breaking out baaaaad. Seriously! There was a point in time where I had between 4-5 large pimples (ugh) on my forehead — and they HURT! I was devastated, and couldn’t figure out why my skin was acting up. I thought maybe it had to do with my diet, so I changed that and also started taking a probiotic. Nope, that didn’t help. I wanted to so badly blame it on my hormones, but the pimples were on my forehead (typically, hormonal acne appears on the chin so they say). My skin has calmed down since, BUT this foundation was my savior. It was so lightweight with a natural finish that didn’t emphasize the pimples, I could build the coverage on the spots that I needed, and leave the rest of my face normal looking, lol (by normal I mean not look like a cake face). However, this foundation does contain salicylic acid, something I NEVER use on my skin, but it doesn’t seem to irritate my skin due to how small of an amount is in here.

Estee Lauder Double Wear (Here)
I can’t rave about this stuff enough, it’s my go-to anytime that I’m going out at night or to an event. This stuff DOES. NOT. BUDGE. Seriously, it will last you all night and it helps all of your other makeup stay on. With this underneath, your blush, bronzer or highlighter will look flawless alllll night long. I have combination-oily skin, and my forehead gets the brunt of that. This stuff helps me stay dry in my oilier spots, and gives me a natural glow in my dryer spots. (Sorry if this whole post is TMI — I’m just trynaaaa keep it 💯 with you guys).

Loreal True Match Super-Blendable Powder (Here)
Alright, I have been using this stuff since I was legit like 13 years old. I think it was one of my first makeup products, ever. And here I am almost 10 years older and still using it. I can’t express how amazing this product is — it’s just like the name, super-blendable. There’s a wide color variety for every skin tone and undertone, I use the shade W7 in the summer and W6 in the winter. No matter what foundation I put underneath it, this stuff makes it that much better. It adds the most natural looking finish while helping to keep my oilier spots dry. Did I mention that it’s under $7.00 — yeah, it is and I would absolutely pay double for it. If you only try out one product from this post make it this one.

Rimmel Match Perfection Concealer (Here)
So I originally bought this because I was tired of using up my NARS Creamy Concealer on normal days (seriously, that stuff is $30 for a tiny tube). However, this Rimmel concealer quickly became one of my favorites.  I use it to highlight under my eyes and it’s perfect. It’s super blendable and buildable, depending on the amount of highlight you want for that day. Not to mention that it’s only $4.99.

Maybelline Lash Sensational (Here)
Remember how I said earlier that the $7.00 mascaras are better than the $25 ones — yeah, I was talking about this one. I’ve probably bought 5 different tubes of this stuff, replacing it every time it runs out. It’s quite literally the only mascara I own, because it gets the job DONE! It lengthens and volumizes my short, thin lashes to the point that you can actually see them :-)! Yay for that, right?

Anastasia Dipbrow Pomade (Here)
My LIFE SAVOR — if you know me you know that I wouldn’t be caught dead without this stuff. REALLY THO, if I was on a deserted island and could only have one makeup product it would 10/10, 20/20, 100/100 be this stuff!!! I’ve worn it to bed, out to dinner, in the shower, in the pool, in the ocean, in the car, on my couch, eating fries, drinking water and it doesn’t budge. It’s a little tricky to learn how to use at first, but seriously — if you’re looking for an amazing brow product TRY THIS OUT.

Vaseline (Here, lol)
I use this stuff religiously. It’s my chapstick, it’s my best friend, it’s my everything. I don’t go anywhere without it… It’s sort of like my security blanket. Try it out, put it on and let me know how much your life is changed forever. YOU’RE WELCOME (in advance)

Kat Von D Shade + Light Face Contour Palette (Here)
I’m not even going to show you guys the inside of this palette because I have seriously destroyed it (as you can probably tell from the outside, lol). I’ve hit pan on every single shade because it’s that good. There are 3 different highlighting shades (banana color, light neutral color, and an orangey shade) and 3 different contouring shades (dark, neutral and cool/ashy shade). Usually, I just mix them all together and make my own weirdo shades but I’ll absolutely be repurchasing this. I’ve had it for probably 2 years now and I still have a ways to go, even though I’ve hit pan on all of the shades. I love higher-end products like this that you can really get good use out of.

Becca Cosmetics Shimmering Skin Perfector in Champagne Pop (Here)
YAAAAAAAS! (in my best Jaclyn Hill voice). Obviously I bought this highlighter because of my love for Jaclyn Hill, but seriously it’s so beautiful. I use it every single time that I go out or want to get really fancy for an event. It’s the most beautiful color, ever. It makes your skin look like a diamond, not to mention that it stays on forever. You only need the smallest amount of this stuff for it to look amazing. Becca’s formula is so smooth, creamy and blendable.

I hope that you guys enjoyed this, let me know if you try any of the products out!

RING-in In The New Year

HEART EYES 😍 Ahhh, how beautiful is this ring you guys!

I’m a ring fanatic — I love how they make any manicure look that much better.  I usually only go for silver rings, because I think gold looks weird with my skin tone. This one was made by one of my sorority sisters, you can check out her beautiful pieces, here.

Each jewelry item is 100% custom and made perfectly for you. I picked out this vintage pink glass (my go-to nail color is pale pink & it matches perfectly 😭), it’s seriously so beautiful! In the sunlight, the glass has this dreamy haze that I can’t get enough of.

The quality, finish and craftsmanship of this piece is top-notch. I’m a size 6 on my index and middle fingers and it couldn’t be more true-to-size.

There’s something special about custom jewelry — it makes you feel like you have something that no one else has. Something that people can’t go into the jewelry store and buy. I know that the holiday season is over, but if you guys have any out-of-town friends or relatives that you’re looking to get a truly special gift for, check these out!

Wow, what a year it has been—I feel like I’ve lived 10 years in these past 12 months, growing and changing every single day.

I thought that I would wrap this year up by looking into the future—not the past. Here are some things that I want to take into the new year with me.

1. MORE Self Love
I feel like this is on my list every year, and there’s a reason for that. It’s because it’s so damn important. We live in a society where the standard is “not enough”. We’re never making enough money, we don’t have enough time, we’re not pretty enough, we’re not smart enough, we don’t have it all together so we’re not enough. These are all things that we’ve heard adults say our whole lives, and then we grow up and we start saying them ourselves.

To me, this way of thinking is literally poison and believing these things because everyone else does is just aiding to the problem, not solving it. I know that we all have our moments where we want to feel pity for ourselves. It’s easier to complain than it is to be positive and change your thought patterns. But I say SCREW THAT—YOU are enough. I am enough. WE are enough. We need to shift our society’s belief pattern, and that starts with ourselves. I am going to continue on my path to ultimate self-love: being kind to myself, pushing myself just as much as I push others, being bold, being brave and most importantly putting myself first. What use are you to those around you when you’re not living your best life and being your best self.

2. Be More Conscious of Unconscious Stressors
Traffic, bad sleeping habits, bad eating habits, not taking enough alone time, other people’s problemsnegativity that lives in our spheres. All of these things are stressors that surround us daily—it’s our job to acknowledge them, and then live consciouslyOne of the biggest lessons that my boyfriend taught me this year is to set intentions around your actions: have purpose behind what you say and what you do. Other people’s demands and expectations are actually the monsters that live under your bed—they will consume your life if you live unconsciously. Please be more aware of this, I know that I certainly will be.

3. Let Go
One of the biggest lessons that I have learned in the past year is learning to let go. I will be the absolute first to admit that this is hard for me. I’m in a constant battle with my mind to fight over-analyzing—playing out every scenario and writing my own irrational script. I am going to continue my pursuit of letting go of expectations, perfectionism, and wanting to have all of the answers before I make a leap. Letting go of the the past, letting go of what other people think about me, letting go of those things that no longer serve me.

4. Be Assertive
One of the greatest gifts that I was given in this lifetime is my compassion for others. I’m able to feel extreme depths of emotion not only for myself, but for the people in my life. However, that compassion has also led to a habit that doesn’t serve me at times—passivity. Some of the greatest changes and accomplishments that I have made in this past year were when I was asserting my values, standards and commanding the life that I want to live. In 2018, I am going to continue pushing past my passivity, speaking up and not being afraid to be vulnerable.

5. Take More Risks & Be Fearless
That comfort bubble is way too easy to stay inside—it’s safe, familiar and predictable. Some of the most empowering moments for me this past year came in those heart racing, sweaty palm moments. Mel Robbins lives by the 3-second rule, she says that you have 3 seconds to ACT and take action before your brain starts to talk you out of whatever you’re choosing to do. I want to thrive within those three seconds, continue to do the uncomfortable because what lies beyond those three seconds is worth it.

2017 was the year I needed. There were some huge lessons that I needed to learn. Better yet, there were even bigger issues lying in my closet—things that I needed to be faced with. 2017 was the year that I could no longer suppress those things, and the craziest part is that I didn’t even know that I was suppressing them. So many times I had to have really tough conversations with myself, be raw and truthful. But each time, I became an even closer version to my best self.

I’m so excited for what this new year has in store for all of us 🖤

Refresh & Rewear—What’s Old Can Be New

As we head into the new year and move away from the spending habits that the holidays put us in, it’s important to remind ourselves that it’s not always about NEW, NEW NEW. Sure, the momentary satisfaction that we get from buying new clothes is exciting—all 5 seconds of it. And then we return home, put away our new clothes, check our bank accounts and think, “Hmm, did I really need that $80 sweater?” The answer is usually a resounding no.

In 2018, I’m making it a priority to refresh & rewear some pieces that I’ve had in my closet for years. The top that I’m wearing has been sitting on a hanger for over 3 years and I’ve only worn it once. I kept thinking, “When am I ever going to wear this again? It’s too dressy.” But I took it out anyway, put it on and remembered why I was so drawn to it in the first place.

It’s one of those tops that just makes you feel good—the cut, the color and the sequins 😍. It is dressy, and it is fancy and that’s exactly why I love it.

Top: Forever 21 (Similar Here, Here)
Leggings: Lululemon
Cardigan: H&M

Just like you can dress any outfit up with jewelry, shoes and accessories—you can dress any outfit down with a cardigan. I added a simple, cool-toned cardigan, put on some leggings & made it work.

So, I encourage you to shop in your own closet more in 2018—don’t always rush out to buy a brand new outfit for that date you have coming up. Pull out those pieces that you’ve been hanging onto for a reason, and show them more love. You’ll remember exactly why you bought them in the first place!

PINspiration—Bedrooms That Inspire Me

For the longest time, I didn’t know what my specific “style” was when it came to home decor—it seemed to me that I liked a little bit of everything. I love pops of color, but I’m also drawn to neutral grey tones and metallics. I love anything clear, crystal and shiny that dances when the sunlight hits it. But my palette isn’t quite modern, and it isn’t full-on glam.

Then it hit me, I can LOVE both styles and mesh them together. A few Pinterest searches later, and I stumbled across the perfect blend of my two worlds: Modern Glam

So… What defines a Modern Glam style?

Neutral Color Palette
Neutrals on neutrals on neutrals—Modern Glam is defined by this monochromatic color palette. You can never have too much white, grey or black.

Metallics, Metallics, Metallics
If it shines, it belongs. The shinier the better—nothing screams GLAM quite like heavy metals.

Pops of Texture
Oh that furry thing laying on the floor?” No, I didn’t get a new pet—that’s just my faux fur rug. Modern Glam plays with textures, and embraces them.

Hints of Soft, Feminine Colors
While neutral rules all, don’t forget about the step-sister in the corner. Soft pinks and delicate hues are often used as accent colors to break up the neutral (I know, I know who would ever want to do that?!).

Iridescent Accents
Incorporate pieces that shine and dance when the sun hits them is a signature staple of a Modern Glam style.

What’s your guys style? I love how everyone expresses themselves differently and has their own unique tastes.

HomeGoods Finds… And They’re GOOD

If you know me, you know how obsessed I am with HomeGoods—they opened one up in Philly back in November + I couldn’t be more thrilled 😍. I went in there yesterday with the intention to find a soap holder for the shower, got completely side tracked and walked out with tons of stuff. Shocker—not one of those things was a soap holder. Oh well, guess that just means I’ll have to venture down there again soon.

I found some pieces that I’m obsessed with—particularly the circular mirrored tray with grey iridescent jewels on it. We get tons of natural sunlight in our bedroom and I love the way they illuminate when the sun hits the jewels 😍. I have to be careful where I display things in the bedroom though—it seriously gets SO hot in there from the sun, even when it’s 30 degrees out.

I also found this beautiful faux flower ensemble in a silver mercury vase. Personally, I’m a huge fan on faux flowers, but I know that they’re not everyone’s cup of tea. I think that they bring so much life and color to any room, but you’ve gotta be selective! This particular arrangement features just bloomed pink peony which is my favorite flower, ever 😍. They’re so full and colorful which help add dimension to a room.

✨ Tip: Feel the petals—make sure that they’re not too stiff. Avoid Shiny greenery at all costs–colorful flowers are usually a safer choice.

I played with these two pieces for seriously over an hour, I’m just a taaaaad particular and moved them around at least 15 times. BUT, I documented this fiasco and wanted to show you guys how one or two new pieces can really spruce up any bedroom.

First, I placed the faux flowers inside of the mirrored tray on our bedside table—this would be perfect as is, but I like to cluster my decorations and felt like this was a little naked.

✨ Tip: Multiples of 3—I find that clustering items together adds THAT much more to your decor. Each piece adds another dimension to the look. Think of it like outfits and accessories, a good outfit isn’t complete without the right finishing touches!

…So then I added this awesome green candle holder that flickers when the candle is lit and a faux succulent—I loved the color variation, but I felt like there were too many round shapes next to the square base of the lamp. Also, I needed more height variation in the mix—the candle holder and the flowers were almost identical in height and width.

✨ Tip: Play around with color! You’ll never really know how two pieces look until you put them side by side. Don’t be afraid to mix color, it usually ends up working out!

Next, I moved both pieces to our dresser—placed them side by side, and swapped out my old perfume tray for the new mirrored one. I LOVE displaying my perfume like this, not only does it let me see everything that I have, but it reminds me to use them all! I place them in height order and try to make everything symmetrical.

As for my old perfume tray? I transformed it into a catch-all for my most loved and worn jewelry pieces. I was just keeping them in this pouch that I had but I love this SO much more—I can actually see them all now!

✨ Tip: Keep it fresh! Switch your items up, and repurpose older pieces in place of your newer ones. Just because you find something that you’ve fallen inlove with, doesn’t mean that you have to abandon your old ones! Find new homes for them, and fresh ways of incorporating them into your decor.

FINALLY, I got it—the flowers were moved back to the night stand and I incorporated some other pieces that I had around the room. The heights and shapes of these were juuuuust right. The varying sizes and shapes didn’t make the square base of the lamp feel out of place.

✨ Tip: Don’t Be Afraid To Mix Metals—I know how awkward it may feel, but coming from someone like me who’s as picky as it comes, the right metals will work together. For example, the pineapple in the picture above is a dark gold color—the complete opposite of essentially everything else in our room. But it works! It’s small, not overpowering and breaks up the silver/clear that rules my color palette.

I hope this gave you guys some inspo for your own spaces! Play around with your pieces—change them up often and just have fun with it! Try different things and move them around. Some final tips that I have for you:

✨ Vary your heights—place objects clustered together that are all different shapes AND heights. This helps each piece shine on their own, an d they don’t be come lost amongst the crowd.

✨ Try Faux Flowers—seriously, give them a try! They’re not for “old ladies” if you pick the right ones. You’ll see how much they can transform your room. Bring those outdoors in, baby!

I’m still on the hunt for wall art and dresser knobs, that post will come in time once I find the right pieces! As with anything, you can’t rush it! I know that I’ll find them some day, and you guys will be the first to know!

Have any decor projects on your agenda? Share your inspo with me!
